"It's the Thailand of Europe": this gem is a hidden jewel that urgently needs to be discovered.

As winter approaches, the allure of far-off destinations intensifies, with Thailand often taking center stage! But in the middle of November, forget endless layovers and jet lag. No need to travel thousands of kilometers with this hidden gem in the heart of Europe.
Sparkling blue waters, lush vegetation, and spectacular cliffs... This landscape, which immediately evokes the famous Andaman lagoons in Thailand, is nevertheless located on our continent. It is called the "Thailand of Europe."
The Shala River is a hidden treasure in Albania, reminiscent of Koh Phi Phi. It is a well-preserved natural wonder that originates in the Albanian Alps, near Radohina Peak in Theth in the north of the country, and flows into the Koman Reservoir.
To reach it, you have to take a boat across Lake Koman, which is often compared to the Norwegian fjords with its vertiginous cliffs. After this hour-long crossing, considered one of the most beautiful boat trips in Europe, you'll arrive on the winding waters of the 37-kilometer-long Shala River. That's where the scenery changes...
Once you dock, the view is breathtaking. You forget the dark color of Lake Koman and are confronted by a lagoon of dazzling emerald blue, surrounded by lush vegetation, with trees clinging to its banks. You've never seen water so crystal clear, and also renowned for being remarkably cool even in summer, as it is fed directly by the melting snow from the surrounding peaks.
To facilitate access to this little paradise, wooden bridges and a few platforms have been built by the locals. Due to its isolated location, far from major cities, the Shala River is like a preserved sanctuary, where time seems to have stood still. Only a few small, locally run bars and restaurants break the silence, offering a warm welcome to the rare visitors.
Beyond swimming in its invigorating waters or relaxing on its landscaped banks, the Shala River is a true outdoor playground: you can go on a kayak trip to explore hidden corners or enjoy hikes on its trails that wind through the wilderness.
The magnificent scenery of the Shala River contrasts sharply with that of the Albanian Riviera, with its numerous arid mountains reminiscent of the Middle East. This still-pristine gem of Albania is more than just a day trip; it's a must-see destination far from the tourist crowds. The easiest way to get there from Paris is to fly to the capital, Tirana (2.5 hours), then take a 2-hour bus ride to Shkodra before embarking on the crossing of Lake Koman.
